Getting Started
How do I know if my child needs a tutor or learning coach?
Signs include falling behind grade level in reading or math, homework taking hours when it should take minutes, avoiding schoolwork or saying “I can’t do it,” difficulty staying organized or remembering assignments, struggles with focus and attention, low confidence about school, or feedback from teachers about needing extra support. If you’re seeing any of these patterns consistently, a learning coach can help identify the root cause and provide targeted support.
What ages and grade levels do you work with?
We work with students from Pre-K through 12th grade in the Denver area. Our tutors specialize in different age ranges, so we’ll match your child with someone who has expertise in their developmental stage and specific challenges.
Do you offer in-person or online tutoring?
Both! We offer three options: in-home tutoring (we come to you), tutoring at your local library, or online tutoring via video call. Many families start with one format and switch based on what works best for their schedule and their child’s learning style.
How do I get started?
Call or text us at 720-466-1176 or fill out the contact form on our website. We’ll schedule a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your child’s needs, answer your questions, and match you with the right tutor. There’s no pressure – we just want to understand how we can help.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is part assessment, part rapport-building. Your tutor will spend time getting to know your child, understanding their learning style and challenges, and doing informal assessments to see where they are academically. We’ll end with specific goals and a plan for moving forward. Parents often say their child feels more hopeful after the first session.
Services & Specialties
What learning differences do you specialize in?
We specialize in supporting neurodiverse learners, including children with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, slow processing speed, limited working memory, and executive functioning challenges. Our tutors are trained in evidence-based methodologies specifically designed for these learning differences.
What is the Can Do Learners methodology?
The Can Do Learners methodology focuses on building connection first, then confidence, tools and strategies, resilience, and belief in themselves – so students can thrive in school and beyond. We started during COVID when students were struggling not just academically but emotionally. We found that when kids feel connected to their tutor and believe they CAN learn, everything else falls into place.
What is Orton Gillingham and how does it help my child?
Orton Gillingham is a multisensory, structured approach to teaching reading that’s especially effective for students with dyslexia, but works for any struggling reader. It teaches reading, spelling, and writing in a systematic way using visual, auditory, and tactile-kinesthetic pathways. Several of our tutors are certified in Orton Gillingham.
Can you help with executive functioning challenges?
Yes! Executive functioning support is one of our specialties. We help students with organization (managing materials and assignments), time management, planning and prioritizing, task initiation (getting started), focus and attention, and self-monitoring. We teach practical systems that work for your child’s brain, not generic strategies.
Do you work with IEPs and 504 plans?
Absolutely. Many of our students have IEPs or 504 plans, and we can work alongside those supports. We can help families understand their child’s plan, advocate for appropriate services, and provide tutoring that complements school interventions. We also partner with educational advocates when families need additional support navigating the IEP/504 process.
Pricing & Logistics
How much does tutoring cost?
Our rates vary by tutor experience and session length, typically ranging from $75-$115 per hour. We’ll discuss specific pricing during your free consultation based on your child’s needs and which tutor is the best match. We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees.
Do you accept insurance or educational waivers?
Yes! We collaborate with Rocky Mountain Human Services and accept waiver payments for eligible families. Contact us to discuss your specific situation and we can help you understand if your child qualifies and how the process works.
How long are tutoring sessions and how often do we meet?
Most students meet for 1-hour sessions, 1-2 times per week. Some younger students do better with 45-minute sessions, while some older students preparing for exams might meet more frequently. We’ll recommend a schedule during your consultation, but we’re flexible and can adjust based on what’s working.
What’s your cancellation policy?
We require 24-hour notice for cancellations. Life happens – we understand! If you need to cancel with less notice due to illness or emergency, just let us know as soon as possible. We’ll work with you to reschedule.
How long until I see results?
Most families notice confidence improvements within 3-4 weeks. Academic improvements typically take 8-12 weeks as we build foundational skills. Some students need longer-term support (6+ months) for significant skill gaps or learning differences. During your consultation and first session, we’ll give you a realistic timeline based on your child’s specific situation.
Tutor Qualifications
What qualifications do your tutors have?
All our tutors are experienced educators – many are former classroom teachers, special education teachers, or have advanced degrees in education. Our founder, Abby Belasco, has 15 years of classroom experience, 25 years as a tutor, a Master’s degree in Literacy, and is National Board Certified. Several tutors are certified in Orton Gillingham, Handwriting Without Tears, and other specialized methodologies.
How do you match my child with a tutor?
We consider your child’s age, learning challenges, personality, and learning style. We also think about scheduling and location. Some kids do better with a high-energy tutor; others need someone calm and patient. Some want someone who loves the same sports or hobbies. We take time to make good matches because the relationship matters as much as the expertise.
Common Concerns
My child hates reading and avoids it. Can you help?
Yes – this is one of the most common situations we see. Often kids avoid reading because it’s hard or frustrating, not because they hate stories or learning. We start by understanding WHY reading is difficult (decoding? fluency? comprehension?) and build skills while also rebuilding their relationship with reading. Many families tell us their child went from “hating reading” to choosing to read for fun.
Can you help with homework battles and getting my child to complete assignments?
Absolutely. Homework battles often signal underlying issues: the work is too hard, your child doesn’t have the organizational systems to manage it, or they’re overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Our tutors work on the academic skills AND the executive functioning strategies to make homework manageable. We also coach parents on how to support without taking over.
What if my child is behind grade level – is it too late to catch up?
It’s never too late. We’ve worked with students who are 2-3 grade levels behind and helped them catch up within a year with consistent support. The key is targeted intervention with the right methodology for their learning style. Some students will always need accommodations, and that’s okay – we help them build compensatory strategies and confidence alongside skills.
